PRODUCT
The textile industry is changing, starting with the product itself and continuing with everything surrounding it. We know there's still much to be done, but we began building a responsible brand when we chose to use sustainable materials for our garments, a decision that now also applies to other aspects of our production process.
Why do we choose organic cotton instead of conventional cotton?
Organic cotton farming helps preserve biodiversity and maintain healthy ecosystems. The origin of the materials is the key. Blue Banana's cotton fabric is made from organic cotton certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) (Version 6.0). For all our products, we require our suppliers to hold certifications issued by international organizations that verify the origin of the materials used in the collections and guarantee:
- The existence of organic production and processing procedures.
- Respect for and improvement of working conditions.
- Promotion of the use of organic fibers.
- Prohibition of hazardous inputs such as toxic heavy metals, aromatic solvents, etc.
Manufacturer inspections are conducted through the quality assurance agency Intertek. These inspections consist of:
- Testing raw fabric composition before dyeing.
- Tests for dimensional stability during washing, fabric weight, pilling resistance, and other tests ensure the quality of all fabrics and colors in production.
And what about recycled polyester?
To create a truly circular system, we should reuse the goods we already have. Polyester recycling involves transforming waste such as plastic bottles into textile fiber. Through this process, we address one of the major environmental challenges of recent times, plastic pollution, and we also repurpose something that will be on our planet for a long time.
New materials: Are they also sustainable?
Nature is our thing, and that's why we choose materials that are respectful of it. In 2021, we focused on materials that were not only sustainable but also innovative, such as the nettle, seaweed, and hemp fibers we used in two of our collections that year.
This year we have made progress in circularity and the use of new materials thanks to two key partnership projects:
- We're launching our first circular collection, "Cosmos-Circularity," made with 40% recycled cotton from our garment waste from previous collections and 60% regenerative GEC (Good Earth Cotton), in collaboration with Belda Llorens. You can see all the details here (link).
- We made our first Roadcycled Wetsuits, made from a material made from recycled Volkswagen car tire rubber (link).
Another material we use for the filling of our coats is recycled Thermolite®, which is created from waste and allows us to take advantage of existing resources and give them a new lease of life.
PACKAGING:
Finding clothes made with eco-friendly materials can be tricky. Making sure those clothes don't arrive home in a plastic bag is an even bigger challenge. You're probably wondering what's the point of buying an ultra-sustainable product if its packaging is damaging to the planet. That's why our packaging is in tune with what's inside:
- Our blue bag is made from recycled non-woven materials.
- Our shipping bag is made from 70% recycled materials.
- Our packaging, which comes with each garment, is made from PLA, a material based on natural and renewable resources like corn and is 100% compostable.
Additionally, it's not yet available for all postal codes, but we've implemented our Sustainable Shipping, opting for a delivery that reduces CO₂ emissions by 42% compared to standard shipping using combustion vehicles.
We partner with Paack to transport orders in a fleet of 100% electric vehicles*, minimizing the environmental impact of your purchase.
